Firstly:
When starting out it is a good idea to create a new email address before signing up for any competitions or free stuff as you may receive alot of spam. It's good to keep it separate from your personal or business email.
Secondly:
When registering use a nickname for your name. That way when you receive any spam addressed to say John, but you registered as Johnny you will know it was spam and not an offer you signed up for.
Thirdly:
Use an email such as Google or Yahoo as they will give you a free email account. You can have more than one account, and you can set up spam filtering so you don't receive as much junk mail.
